Counsellor & Life Coach in Newton Abbot

Frequently Asked Questions

Q) How long are the counselling sessions and how often do I need to attend?

A) I offer 60 minute therapy sessions on a weekly basis. This can be stretched to fortnightly, however having longer than fortnightly gaps between session, it can be less effective.

Q) How many therapy sessions will I need and can I stop the counselling at any point?

A) Counselling should be seen as a process, not an event ie. change is made not just in one session but through a series of them. The number of sessions varies depending on what you want to explore. Everyones needs are as individual as their circumstances, so it's impossible to set a generic time limit on therapy. When we meet for your initial free session, I will be able to give you a rough idea based around what you would like to address. We will have regular reviews to check we are still on track to achieve your objectives. It is your choice as to how long you embark on therapy. All I ask is that if you are thinking about stopping your counselling, we have one last session to ensure you are in a good place before we close down on our work together.

Q) How much does private counselling cost?

A) As each session is tailored to each clients needs, it's difficult to set a one price fits all, without first talking to you. It depends on your objectives, the issues you would like to address, how regularly you can commit to your sessions and your expectations. All of which are discussed at our initial session - which is Free of Charge. I can say that my rates are competitive with other counsellors and life coaches in my area and it's more helpful to choose a counsellor you feel you can comfortably connect with rather than basing your decision on price alone. I also do a concession rate for counselling students who can prove they are on a registered counselling, psychology course i.e letter from their college.

Q) What's your availability?

A) I am currently taking on new clients for both face to face and online counselling. I have availability on Mon-Thurs. Due to my counselling room being on my premises, I do not offer weekend appointments because I am unable to guarantee a quiet, private space for clients. If you need to fit in your therapy around your work then please still get in touch because I have a few weekday evening appointments still available.

Q) "I work shifts" - do you have flexibility on appointments?

A) I do have flexibility - at the end of each appointment we can book a slot for the following week. I will do what I can to accommodate you however clients who have set regular weekly appointments will get priority. If I am unable to accommodate you I will put you on a waiting list for your preferred appointment time for that week and if I get a cancellation I will contact you. It may be a little last minute so don't worry if by the time I contact you, you have other plans, we can postpone until the following week.

Q) Is your counselling room overlooked, is there signage outside and is it safe?

A) There is no signage stating what I do so no one will know that you are coming to counselling. I will provide directions when you first book so you can find me ok. My counselling room overlooks my garden area, so no one can see you inside. It is a private, tranquil and safe space.

Q) Is there onsite parking?

A) There is no onsite parking however there is on street parking in Crossley Moor Road or Tarrs Avenue both are within easy walking distance.

Q) Do I need to be referred- ie by a GP or mental health agency/charity?

A) No, you do not need to be referred, you can self-refer. If you are looking for help the chances are that you need it as soon as possible, and this is one of the many advantages of choosing to go private.

Q) Can I refer a friend or relative?

A) Whilst I understand the feelings of helplessness when witnessing a loved one experiencing mental distress I recommend that where ever possible you try and get them to contact me themselves. This will be a big step for them so your encouragement and support in getting the right help for them will be invaluable. If you feel that you need to speak to me first, then please get their permission to discuss their situation, before you contact me. For counselling to be effective the client has to be fully onboard, willing and wanting to make changes in their life.

Q) What is the age range of your clients?

A) I look after clients that are over 18 to retirement and beyond. I am not qualified in the field of Child Psychology, however do still get in touch as I counsellors who are qualified to counsel that specific age group.

Q) Is what I tell you completely confidential - what are the guidelines around disclosure to the police?

A) Your privacy and confidentiality is of the utmost importance to me - please email me for my GDPR & Privacy Statement, which outlines the measures I take to ensure this. There are, however, boundaries and limits that I am legally bound by and I reserve the right to consult or inform an outside authority i.e GP or Police if;

  • I consider you are likely to endanger or cause harm to either yourself or another person.
  • You infer involvement in, or knowledge of, an act of terrorism, money laundering or drugs trafficking.
  • You infer knowledge of, or involvement in, behaviours that may , in my opinion, lead to harm or neglect to children or vulnerable adults.
  • I will endeavour to inform you of my decision and explain my reasons why prior to carrying out this action. However, I retain the right to do so without prior consultation with you should the urgency of the situation require me to act immediately to safeguard the physical safety of yourself or others.
I have tried to cover most of the questions that are frequently asked, however if you have one I have missed, then please get in touch via email or phone.
